29 allow a legal ceremony for visitors, 4 are restricted and 1 is symbolic only. "No long residency wait" = you can marry within about 3 days of arriving (paperwork may still be needed in advance). "Same-sex: Not confirmed" means we could not confirm it on an official page, not that it is unavailable. * = from a snippet or a tourism-authority page, not read directly on a government page. Fees are government fees only.
Five things couples get wrong
- France and Spain are mostly closed to visiting couples for a legal civil wedding. France needs one partner to have lived in the town for a month; Spain takes applications only where one partner lives. Legal vs symbolic →
- Americans and Canadians need a GBP 135 Marriage Visitor visa to marry in the UK, even though they can visit with just an ETA. Scotland / UK →
- Puerto Rico still requires lab tests, signed by a Puerto Rico doctor and valid 10 days. Puerto Rico →
- Maldives weddings are always symbolic, and most Bali weddings are blessings. Maldives →
- Same-sex marriage is newly legal in Thailand (2025), Aruba (2024) and Greece (2024). Thailand →
Watch for "legal wedding" packages that aren't
Resorts often sell a beach or garden ceremony that is symbolic only. The legal marriage is a separate civil act with its own paperwork, and sometimes blood tests and witnesses. Ask your planner in writing: who registers the marriage, and which government certificate will we receive? Each destination page lists the pitfalls we found.
